Alan Mak and Felix Chong, who scripted Infernal Affairs and its two sequels, codirected this amiably dark 2006 comedy drama from Hong Kong, about an irascible small-time hustler (Chapman To) who tries to settle a debt to a deranged yakuza boss by exploiting a handsome retarded man (Leon Lai) as a male prostitute. Despite the unsavory premise, Mak and Chong craft a story of male camaraderie that's touching and remarkably free of cynicism. Scenes from Swan Lake bracket the action, which stresses the transformative power of friendship and loyalty, though the theme is somewhat compromised by an unexpectedly violent resolution.
