San Francisco tech-death band Fallujah hit upon a magic formula on their first full-length, 2011’s The Harvest Wombs, and refined it on last year’s EP Nomadic. With any luck their new album, The Flesh Prevails (Unique Leader), will present that formula’s beautiful flowering to the wider world. Fallujah’s metal is inarguably fierce and brutal—the watery, ethereal interludes in the title track only serve to make its cold, calculated maelstroms sound more violent—but vulnerability and hope flow through it like a subterranean river. “Sapphire” is startling in its straightforward yearning, and the romantic, erotic undertones in “Alone With You” are particularly surprising and welcome in this genre. Vocalist Alex Hofmann isn’t the most versatile of roarers, but he compensates with volume and conviction. This is a lovely record that I expect will keep rewarding replays until the far-off and lonesome heat death of the universe. Or at least until Fallujah’s next one comes out and I start listening to it instead. —Monica Kendrick
