UIC-area outpost of the Libertyville sports bar, serving food with aspirations beyond pub grub.
Though Morgans is just another shiny storefront in cookie-cutter University Village, everything about it screams "We want to be more than a sports bar!" A vaulted copper-tile ceiling, exposed stone wall, and high windows give the space a clean, contemporary look. And though they offer the bar-food staples--wings, quesadillas, burgersowners Paul and Craig Engberg, with the help of chef Jim Silva, are trying to take the menu beyond standard-issue pub grub. Entrees in the $10-$20 range include linguine with sun-dried tomato pesto and a beef fillet in a house demi sauce; weekly specials expand the daily pasta and fish offerings (you cant get walleye at ESPN Zone). There are also hearty soups (French onion, vegetarian barley), calamari and pizza Margherita, and several wines by the glass. The dessert menu changes frequently, but on my visit it featured apple tart with white chocolate sauce and carrot cake, both touted as made from scratch.
