Morning Sun

Carma Hinton and Richard Gordon's 1995 documentary The Gate of Heavenly Peace traced the events leading up to Tiananmen Square; in this 2003 film they look back to the Cultural Revolution of the 60s and 70s, examining how Mao was able to incite much of China's youth to turn violently on their peers and elders for their lack of revolutionary zeal, thus distracting the nation from food shortages and other failures of his regime. The filmmakers artfully combine interviews, news footage, and clips from period films to document one of the greatest feats of mass manipulation in history. In English and subtitled Chinese. 117 min.
