Mother Krausen's Journey to Happiness

Piel Jutzi's 1929 film dates from the declining days of the German cinema, when the higher flights of expressionism (represented by Murnau and Lang) were beginning to be replaced by the often facile social analyses of G.W. Pabst and his followers. Mother Krausen is a “street film,” an ambiguous genre that welded broad melodrama to a pseudodocumentary style. Few of these films are in circulation in the U.S., so this one should be worth checking out.
