Mother of the Dark Water Recommended Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Image Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through March 4 2018

Through the clamor of a storm, an uncanny invocation erupts, mournful and resonant. A woman walks down the steps, clasping hands with the people in the aisle, joined in song by four others. Mari (Lynsey Ann Moxie) is the priestess of the ceremony, leading Amariss Harris, Johari Nandi, Jordan Rome, and Kiayla Ryann, through a series of stories about black womanhood that seem intensely personal yet familiar to anyone who's ever felt alien. Why does the image of the Madonna exclude the possibility of color? they ask. Does that mean I am not beautiful or good? What is beautiful? What is good? Anchored in the timelessness of schoolyard rhymes, contemporary in its consideration of powerful women of color, Mother of the Dark Water, directed and devised by Lauren Wells, is a necessary ritual for our time. —Irene Hsiao
