The only unexpected joy we felt the week following September 11, 2001, was in seeing Steve James's smiling face on the cover of the Chicago Reader September 14.

Steve and his ace Cunningham Movers crew moved us in July. Every absurd challenge we posed to them (like getting a loveseat up a tight spiral staircase) was met with ingenuity and great energy. Even during breaks, some of the guys did crunches and sit-ups to stay pumped for the seven-hour move.

Few things are more inspiring than watching a truly passionate, competent professional at work. Steve understands quite clearly that he's moving not just things, but people in a state of high stress. He made an unforgettable impression on us with his intensity and the depth of his commitment to just about everything he touched. He's a tough man with a golden soul, and we are very grateful to have met him.
