Mozart speaks!

On the last day of October 1783, Mozart wrote to his father: "On Tuesday, November 4, I am giving a concert in the theater here and, as I have not a single symphony with me, I am writing a new one at breakneck speed." The result was the Linz Symphony. In those really wireless days, the written word traveled on paper that was often cherished and saved. So we have a treasure trove of Mozart's correspondence that reveals his chronic financial problems ("Dearest Hoffmeister! I turn to you in my distress and beg you to help me out with some money"), his intimate moments with his wife ("Arrange your dear sweet nest very daintily, for my little fellow deserves it indeed"), and his relationship with his patron ("At least I have the honor of being placed above the cooks"). German actor Christoph Bantzer will bring Mozart's letters to life, and Anne Leek and Ravinia Festival music director Christoph Eschenbach will perform his work on oboe and piano, in an unusual combination of theater and music Monday, July 31, in the Martin Theatre at the Ravinia Festival. It starts at 8; theater tickets are $25 to $35 and lawn seating is $10. The festival is located at Lake Cook and Green Bay roads in Highland Park. Call 847-266-5100. --Deanna Isaacs
