Mr. and Mrs. 55

Guru Dutt's 1955 melodrama-musical-comedy about an heiress who must marry to inherit her millions was a hit in India, though it's more calculated entertainment than convincing narrative. The woman's aunt, who dislikes men and regards marriage as slavery, hires an unemployed cartoonist to be the groom, but the woman grows to like him, and numerous plot twists ensue as the couple struggle against the aunt. There are some fetching if kitschy musical numbers, particularly “There She Goes, Leaving My Heart Aflutter,” which is staged among rural folk shaking saris to dry. In Hindi with subtitles. 152 min.
