Mr. Marmalade Closing (Theater and Galleries) Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Sept. 1 2013

Noah Haidle's 2004 comedy, which depicts four-year-old Lucy's troubled relationship with an abusive, coked-out imaginary friend, Mr. Marmalade, somehow retains a charming sense of innocence. Twentysomething actress Christine Worden portrays Lucy with disturbing authenticity in this production from Dream Sequence Productions, putting a whimsical lens on its dark adult themes. Left alone for the evening, Lucy lives out a lengthy relationship arc with her troubled pal. Though we get glimpses of the home life that might have inspired her fantasy, Haidle leaves the explanations and moralizing delightfully subtle. Director Amber Gensterblum's cast display a conspicuous lack of experience, but in this rare instance, their occasional fumbles and earnest attack only add to the show's charms. —Keith Griffith
