Mr. Muthafuckin' Exquire, King Louie, ShowYouSuck Recommended Soundboard

When: Sat., Jan. 21, 9 p.m. 2012

It's emblematic of the topsy-turvy state of the culture business that one of the most highly regarded record labels and music publications at the moment is NYC fashion line Mishka, which is neither a record label nor a music publication, at least not in the traditional sense. Mishka has promoted and released a range of tastemaking sounds, from Das Racist to seapunk, and one notable act to receive its imprimatur is Brooklyn rapper Mr. Muthafuckin' Exquire. In September the brand released his Lost in Translation mix tape as a free download, and it's since found a spot on a lot of critics' year-end lists. Unlike most other young rappers on those lists—not to mention most other MCs repping his borough these days—Exquire appears to have little interest in challenging the genre's stylistic and philosophical boundaries. Instead he comes across as a typical hip-hop head from ungentrified Brooklyn—his primary concerns involve smoking blunts and playing Xbox while listening to rap records that never got big outside NYC, and he also happens to make albums for the same type of dude. —Miles Raymer King Louie and ShowYouSuck open.
