Mr. Skeffington | Chicago Reader

Mr. Skeffington

Social butterfly Bette Davis marries a Jewish stockbroker (Claude Rains) for his money, but after 30 years of suffering (and 127 minutes of screen time) she learns to love him. This 1944 feature is a typical Davis vehicle from the period, lavishly produced in the slightly tacky Warner Brothers tradition. Vincent Sherman's limping direction becomes a liability over the long haul, but these monster projects have their own fascinations.
