George R. Sims, a playwright and journalist in Victorian London, wrote ballads that he accompanied with images projected by a "magic lantern," a slide machine developed in the 17th century. Scholars David Francis and Joss Marsh present six of those ballads tonight in a performance that incorporates original lantern slides, a century-old magic lantern, and live piano accompaniment.
