Music + Movement Showcase rocks the Auditorium

Six dance troupes boogie to live music.

If you've never seen footworking done with a live band—and who has?—here's your chance. In a culmination of the Auditorium Theatre's months-long Music + Movement Festival, the hip-hop arts organization Kuumba Lynx performs with jazz-and-blues-oriented band Urban Aspirations in Braid Tales . . . Remix. Choreographer and FootworKINGz member Christopher "Mad Dog" Thomas says Chicago juke music inspired the band, which really needed to speed things up to come close to the movement's usual 170 beats per minute. Set in a salon/barbershop and performed by Thomas and members of the KL apprentice and adult ensembles, Braid Tales also features spoken word by Kuumba Lynx's award-winning slam poetry squad.

Surely the venerable old Auditorium stage has never seen the like before. And at just $20, the Music + Movement Showcase, which includes six dance/live music partners from the festival as well as Giordano Dance Chicago, is a huge bargain. Jazz/classical pianist Greg Spero accompanies tap group BAM! in a work by Princess Grace Award-winning choreographer Michelle Dorrance. Mexican Dance Ensemble teams up with Los Condenados Huastecos, Amanda Batterson fiddles along to Thodos Dance Company's Sentinet, DanceWorks Chicago performs with drummer Paul Wertico, and Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre, accompanied by a jazz trio, does Wilfredo Rivera's Black Tears.
