Mutant Action

Spanish cult director Alex de la Iglesia made his feature debut with this grungy sci-fi satire (1993) produced by his mentor Pedro Almodovar. The cheapo, minimally lit sets remind me of Peter Jackson's first movie, Meet the Feebles, and the lovably grotesque characters suggest early Terry Gilliam. The title refers to a group of deformed gonzos who carry out terrorist missions against beautiful celebrities and the culture of personal attractiveness; they kidnap a young heiress and fly her to a distant planet, but the group falls apart en route, with the duplicitous leader (Antonio Resines) battling a pair of conjoined twins (Alex Angulo and Juan Viadas). A decent midnight movie, with comic themes that the director explores to greater effect in his new release, El crimen perfecto. In Spanish with subtitles. 90 min.
