More innocuous than charming, this animal-as-athlete adventure follows Jack, a chimpanzee trained in American Sign Language, across British Columbia. The death of Jack's teacher—an event that's repeatedly telegraphed, gingerly dramatized, then euphemistically referred to—nearly turns Jack into a lab animal in a hepatitis study, another thing the movie soft-pedals. A friend puts the chimp on a train headed for a wildlife preserve, but writers Anne Vince and director Robert Vince make Jack miss the stop: some junior hockey players in a small town at the end of the line desperately need inspiration, and one boy's little sister desperately needs a friend.
