My Afternoons With Margueritte

In this Gallic variation on Driving Miss Daisy, an illiterate working man (Gerard Depardieu) strikes up a friendship with a lonely old lady (Gisele Casadesus), who spends their daily rendezvous in the park reading him the Camus novel The Stranger. Periodic flashbacks reveal the sad, generic details of his youth: his mother was an abusive drunk and his schoolmaster made him an object of sport in the classroom. Jean Becker directed this sentimental but often quite sweet drama (2010), adapting a novel by Marie-Sabine Roger. In French with subtitles.
