My Best Friend

Daniel Auteuil stars as a cold-blooded antique dealer whose associates, gathered to celebrate his birthday, all admit they don't like him and wager that he can't produce a single person who'd call him a real friend. His chances look grim until he meets a sweet, unassuming cabbie (Dany Boon) who makes a point of liking everybody. The movie's reptilian setup doesn't do much to nurture a sense of mirth, and Auteuil is too likable an actor to make an effective SOB. By the time director Patrice Leconte (Intimate Strangers) arrives at his predictable climax and conventional moral, this lethargic French comedy may not have any friends either. In French with subtitles. PG-13, 90 min.
