My Bloody Valentine All Ages Critic's Choice Early Warnings (Music) Member Picks Recommended Soundboard

When: Sat., Sept. 27, 8 p.m. 2008

According to all reports on the My Bloody Valentine reunion tour so far, you won’t have to pinch yourself to make sure it’s really happening—the legendary band’s incredible volume (reportedly enough to break the Guinness record, if the people at Guinness still encouraged threats to public health) should cause enough pain all by itself. Guitarist and bandleader Kevin Shields has been accused of being a cock tease on par with Brian Wilson and Axl Rose—MBV had most of a record done when it broke up in ’95, and he’s been promising a release of that and more for ages—but he has a laundry list of excuses. Aside from playing in Primal Scream, he’s kept busy as a producer, remixer, and accompanist for a variety of artists, including Patti Smith, whose book-length poem The Coral Sea is supported by his backing guitar. MBV hasn’t really been active since its 1991 masterpiece Loveless, but the band has found a new generation of fans, some of whom may have learned about it from their now deaf parents. —Monica Kendrick
