My Brother's Keeper Recommended Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through May 30 2010

Yes, there's a staircase centerstage and, yes, the tap-dancing Nicholas Brothers (Rueben Echoles, who also wrote the script, and RaShawn Thompson) descend it by leaping over each other into splits and rising up sans hands to do it again. The routine, from the 1943 film Stormy Weather, is only the most famous bit of an amazingly long, influential, and acrobatic career (they guest-starred on The Jacksons TV show in 1977). Excursions into biography drag a little--people marry, divorce, die--but the musical numbers are worth waiting for. Jackie Taylor's staging soars when the performers are singing and/or hoofing to classic songs like "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" and "Jumpin' Jive," well played by an eight-piece band. --Laura Molzahn
