MY MORNING JACKET have never shied away from the outlandish. With extravagances like a Kirk Hammett cameo during their three-hour rain-drenched set at this year’s Bonnaroo or a Letterman performance with members of the Boston Pops, they boost their slightly jammy, slightly psychedelic indie rock into an almost surreal space. Though their latest record, Evil Urges(ATO), tightens up the songs—there are fewer of the drawn-out, hypnotizing riff fests that helped Hammett’s appearance make sense—the band hasn’t lost its taste for the zany and theatrical, as it proves with the silly falsetto vocals, awkward demonic laughter, and stiffly robotic chorus of “Highly Suspicious.” And if you prefer MMJ in following-every-tangent mode, like I do, there’s still their awesome live shows, where even the most concise album tracks can explode into epics. —Kevin Warwick
