My Name Is Julia Ross

This 1946 gothic thriller (a family of eccentrics conspires to drive a young woman insane) established the commercial and critical reputation of an ambitious young director, Joseph H. Lewis, who had worked until then only in the depths of B productions. Lewis's later work, where meaning finally catches up with his dazzling mise-en-scene, is much richer, but Julia Ross remains an interesting exercise in American expressionism, despite its incidental incoherencies. 65 min.
