My So-Called Afterlife Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: March 7-April 18 2013

In Tim Paul's comic musical, which only vaguely resembles its 90s namesake, AIDS poster child Ryan White moves from hell to heaven and must reenroll in high school—with Anne Frank, JonBenet Ramsey, and Conor Clapton, among others. Paul uses the scenario as an opportunity to send up Western culture's delicate treatment of subjects like celebrity death, AIDS, and the Holocaust. While this kind of over-the-top, flippant attitude is common in contemporary comedy, Paul's take is more often than not hilarious and incisive. Alex Kliner's music, plus some of the script, singing, and lighting, can be uneven, but Paul is definitely a writer/director to watch out for. —Tal Rosenberg
