Employed by Hong Kong's venerable Shaw Brothers studio for over 40 years, Lau Kar-leung both directed and acts in this kooky kung fu comedy (1980). His idea of making the hero a woman defied genre conventions, and despite some ham-fisted comedic bits, the film sparkles. A young woman (the indomitable Kara Hui) marries the dying elder of an esteemed family to prevent his estate from falling into the hands of his malevolent younger brother. After the property deed is stolen she sets out to recover it, though the plot machinations are always secondary to the wondrously choreographed fight sequences. In Mandarin with subtitles.
