Naqoyqatsi

Godfrey Reggio's trilogy of experimental travelogues concludes with this dizzying yet thematically inert journey through the dystopian cyberscenery of the 21st century. Reggio unleashes a torrent of digitally distorted, often decolorized clips culled from film archives, TV broadcasts, and the Internet. Multinational corporate logos, Internet icons, computer code, and religious symbols hurtle by, world leaders are represented by wax replicas, and the everyman is reduced to test dummies thrashing around in slow motion. As in Koyaanisqatsi (1983) and Powaqqatsi (1988), Reggio translates his title only at the end (“war as a way of life”). Despite his citation of postmodern French philosopher Jean Baudrillard in interviews, this is more like The Sixth Sense writ large: we are all dead but don't know it. 89 min.
