Naughty by Nature made its career on a pair of quasi-novelty anthems fueled by irresistibly jaunty beats and clever use of arresting piano samples. "O.P.P.," the group's hymn to infidelity, turned into one of the biggest singles of 1991 with its homage to the Jackson 5's "ABC" and the rapid-fire amorality of rapper Treach's dead-on delivery. The second single was "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" (called "Ghetto Bastard" on the album), a rather received-sounding tale of ghetto life that nonetheless did the deed again by means of another killer piano tinkle and a cop from "No Woman No Cry." Whether the group can sustain its momentum with the new 19NaughtyIII, however, is doubtful. Everyone raved about the first single, "Hip Hop Hooray," but I don't hear the appeal; nor do I hear anything on the rest of the album that indicates we're going to be hearing much about the band in 19NaughtyIV. But even if we never hear the band again, their legacy will be two great singles, one of them the sound track to a summer. The band plays Saturday and Sunday; the admission policy is complex enough to make it worth explaining here. Twelve bucks gets you the early, all-ages show by Black 47 at 7 PM; if you're over 21, you can stay later for both Dave Wakeling (formerly of the English Beat), who plays at 10:45, and Naughty by Nature, who are scheduled for 12:30 AM. If you go in after 9 PM, blanket admission to the club and both shows is $15. Sunday, Naughty By Nature plays at 11:30; admission is $15. China Club, 616 W. Fulton; 466-0400.
