Naughty Nostalgia | Stage 773 | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader

Naughty Nostalgia Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Saturdays. Continues through June 1 2013

Vaudezilla's weekly burlesque show peeps at the past through a series of themed stripteases and uneven skits. On the night I visited, titillating acts by students of Vaudezilla's burlesque classes preceded a performance by the week's headliner, Red Rum, who took the stage in a geisha-cum-Miss-Havisham getup that became more complex with each layer removed. The nostalgia theme fell away during the intermittent comedy sketches, including one of a "Little Ms. Gorgeous" pageant that looked no further back than Honey Boo Boo. The best bits—a perfectly timed Back to the Future routine, a kinky homage to TV dinners—stuck to kitsch. Vaudezilla cofounder Dick Dijon pitches in as a Lurch-like emcee who rarely speaks and never loosens his tie. —Hannah Gold
