Though his flow is as smooth and sturdy as a thick chunk of black-walnut wood, Chicago rapper Neak likes to sprinkle in subtle vocal lilts to add extra layers of Downy comfort to his soul-inspired tracks. But his wheelhouse extends beyond post-Motown beats, as evidenced by his latest self-released mixtape, 2013’s XIII, which features the chest-bursting sounds of electro-trap on “Bad Habits (Renegades Trap Remix).” Yet Neak excels when he’s wrapped up in instrumentals that sound like they were handcrafted from high-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets; for example, the rapper shows a considerable grasp of mood on the unostentatious, immersive nighttime track “Lights Down.” Since releasing XIII Neak’s been hard at work on the follow-up, Paura/Amore, which he says is nearly complete—and chances are he’ll drop some unreleased cuts into the set tonight.
