Neil Young Journeys

Rated PG 87 minutes

After Neil Young: Heart of Gold (2006) and Neil Young Trunk Show (2009), concert documentary master Jonathan Demme delivers the last installment of his Young trilogy, recording a solo show at Massey Hall in the singer's native Toronto. The locale gives Young and Demme a chance to tool around town in a 1956 Crown Victoria, inspecting Young's old haunts and laughing over anecdotes from his childhood (a playmate once persuaded him to eat tar, insisting it had a chocolate aftertaste). The ensuing show alternates between novel takes on Young's greatest hits ("After the Gold Rush" on harmonica and pump organ) and solid renditions of less memorable tunes from his 2010 album Le Noise. As a songwriter, Young can still deliver: one of the best tunes here is a lovely, piano-propelled number, "Leia," that he hasn't even released yet.
