Never the Same: The Prisoner of War Experience

116 minutes 2013

Documentary maker Jan Thompson looks at U.S. soldiers who were interned in Japanese concentration camps during World War II. Drawn extensively from first-hand sources (present-day interviews, diaries and comic strips written inside the camps), this often feels like a personal reminiscence more than a straightforward history lesson, yet it's still highly informative, recounting in precise detail the Japanese army's barbarous practices and the prisoners' day-to-day existence inside the camps. Some of the material feels extraneous—there's a lengthy section about prisoners writing cookbooks to deal with their hunger—but on the whole this shares an essential history.
