New work by Sharon Couzin

The short films of Sharon Couzin, a faculty member at the School of the Art Institute, present surreal bricolages of fetishized objects and enigmatic utterances. Her best work (Salve, Bouquet) infuses the random with an elegant, playful logic. This program comprises three new pieces. In Elusive Cha-Cha (2002, 12 min.)—the latest in a series of collaborative works by Couzin and local performance artists Lynn Book and E.J. Sims—snippets from an inane romance novel (read with catchy cadence by Book) accompany a rapid montage of Jungian symbols and jarring footage of Sims dancing. The mood is giddy and the aesthetics summon Laurie Anderson to mind. Unavailable for viewing at press time were Her Other Self (15 min.) and Old Japan Now (58 min.).
