Next to Normal The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Sept. 27 2015

MadKap Productions’ take on this Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical is intimate and achingly raw. It's a portrait of the middle-class Goodman family, whose cookie-cutter "normal" appearance is quickly shattered by events that reveal matriarch Diana’s bipolar disorder and its accompanying depression and delusions. As Diana, Whitney Morse cycles between sweetness, sarcasm, and psychosis but is at her most chilling acting out the aftereffects of electroshock therapy and sedation. As husband Dan, Brian Zealand plays up a state of denial that any member of a family with its own share of baggage could relate to. The Goodman children, Natalie (Molly LeCaptain) and Gabe (Jordan Grzybowski), highlight the show with their charisma, emotional range, and unbelievable vocal chops. You'll leave the theater wondering, as Gabe does, which is worse, the cure or the disease? —Marissa Oberlander
