Next The Short List (Theater) Recommended Critics' Picks Brief Run (Theater)

When: May 7-9 2010

Shirley Mordine has informally cultivated the choreographic talents of her ensemble members for years, but she also runs a mentoring program for emerging artists who aren't part of Mordine & Company Dance Theater, and premieres by two program participants are featured in her annual Next show. Archana Kumar blends kathak and modern dance ingeniously in the trio Bubbles Collide, in which the dancers wear bells on just one ankle, not both, so that silent as well as percussive movement is an option. And Kumar again uses fabric creatively, as she did last summer, when she buried herself in it at "The AWARD Show!" Here, she wraps her dancers in ways that can both bring them together and constrict them. Expert improviser Ayako Kato contributes Incidents I, a trio exploring the parameters of improv. And Mordine offers a revision of her own work about itinerant entertainers, I Haven't Gone There. With added texts by Goat Island veteran Bryan Saner and a new avant-garde klezmer score composed by Mark Messing and played live by members of his marching band, Mucca Pazza, the piece feels much jollier than it did at its 2009 premiere. --Laura Molzahn
