This year's Grammys were something of a coming-out party for the current generation of electronic dance musicians, with Skrillex pulling in three trophies and Deadmau5 sharing the stage with rock dinosaurs the Foo Fighters. While their brand of dance music—big, eager to please, and arena ready—is likely to dominate public perception, hopefully some attention will trickle down to the likes of Nguzunguzu. The LA duo doesn't offer the same overblown hedonism as the new EDM rock stars, but it's hardly inaccessible or cerebral. Nguzunguzu's Africanized house beats and dark moods shouldn't be too exotic for anyone who got down with 808s & Heartbreak, and the Transmusicales mix they made in November for French webzine Wow proves how well those elements fit with, say, a Ciara track or the classic "Hay" from local rap heroes Crucial Conflict. —Miles Raymer Supreme Cuts, Bizzies, Sparkletone, and Jake Guidry open.
