When: Thu., March 19, 8:30 p.m. 2015

In January, the opening of the DuSable Museum exhibition Free at First: The Audacious Journey of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians began what promises to be a full year of citywide events in honor of the AACM’s semicentennial. Over its 50 years the organization has promulgated a collective ethic and an inclusive aesthetic vision that have informed the musical accomplishments of member-musicians like Muhal Richard Abrams, Fred Anderson, Henry Threadgill, George Lewis, and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. The members of this new trio—flutist Nicole Mitchell, cellist Tomeka Reid, and drummer Mike Reed—have each held administrative posts for the AACM’s executive committee, and their collective experience encompasses jazz, free improvisation, chamber music, and even a bit of country rock. They will play pieces composed and performed by other AACM members, but their intent is not re-creation, but reinterpretation. —Bill Meyer
