Nightclubbing: Greatest Hits

The Film Center concludes its series of video programs from the archives of Pat Ivers and Emily Armstrong—whose live-music show, Nightclubbing, ran on New York public-access cable between 1977 and 1980—with this kaleidoscopic blast from 20 different artists. A fair number are still marquee names: Blondie (covering “Femme Fatale”), John Cale (covering “Walking the Dog”), Talking Heads, Iggy Pop, the Cramps, the Dead Kennedys. The program also features some great bands that have since descended into obscurity (Pylon, the Suburbs, the Bush Tetras) and talented ones that never ascended out of it (the Stilettos, the Revelons, the Offs). The sound quality varies from good to horrendous, but this is still a treasure trove for fans of late-70s underground music. With the Heartbreakers, the Dead Boys, the Lounge Lizards, Strange Party, Ballistic Kisses, and Levi and the Rockats. 75 min.
