No Escape

An American family must run for their lives when a coup erupts in the southeast Asian country where the father has been sent for work. Directed and cowritten by John Erick Dowdle (As Above, So Below), this action thriller proceeds as one long chase, the protagonists finding danger nearly everywhere they turn (the paramilitary forces behind the coup are killing foreigners on sight). Dowdle sticks closely to the family's perspective, for better and for worse; though fairly effective at conveying their terror, he fails to establish any sort of social or political context for the story. With Owen Wilson, Lake Bell, and Pierce Brosnan.
