No Fats, No Femmes: Tales of Dialing Up, Coming Out, and Getting Off Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Sundays. Continues through Aug. 28 2011

Monologuist Tim Paul has a knack for making himself look ridiculous. On the one hand, he casts himself as a victim, recounting clumsy misadventures in which his romantic dreams are soured by liars, cheaters, fetishists, closet cases, and all manner of emotional cripples. Yet he also makes it clear that he's the most maladjusted of the bunch, bedding men he knows are completely wrong for him mostly because they've got mustaches and dogs. It takes Paul a while to warm to his subject—in the first half, he chronicles his adolescent sexual fumblings without providing much personalizing detail. But he ultimately uses boyish candor to blend absurdity, pathos, and graphic sex in ways that are deeply humanizing. —Justin Hayford
