No Longer in Service

"The CTA taketh away" all right, but the other half of your caption (December 25) is wrong. It wasn't the CTA who gave most of what the CTA hath taken away: it was the Chicago Surface Lines, the Chicago Motor Coach Company, and the Chicago Rapid Transit Company.

The most unfortunate thing about the 1945 legislation that created the CTA and gave it a monopoly over public transportation in Chicago is that the CTA got a monopoly not only over services that it provides, but also over services that it doesn't provide. It would be too much to hope that the city council would amend that law so that the CTA would lose its monopoly over any services that it stops providing.
