No Men Allowed

102 minutes 2012

In this Iranian rom-com (2011), a fiercely feminist principal at an all-girls academy (Vishka Asayesh) fires one of her teachers and discovers to her dismay that the only suitable replacement is a man (Reza Attaran). Despite her aversion to the male sex, he attempts to woo her, and their courtship becomes a battle of wills that allows for a satire of gender inequality. The premise may seem familiar, but the movie is charming and often quite funny; first-time director Rambod Javan (a popular comedian and sitcom star in Iran) seems to have been inspired by Judd Apatow, particularly in his careful attention to the characters' idiosyncrasies. In Persian with subtitles.
