Chicago native Hannibal Buress, who goes by Hannibal, is only 24 but has been performing stand-up for five years. Many local comedians are oddly selective about the rooms they play, but Hannibal is comfortable anywhere, he says, as long as he's avoiding "hack" material. He moved to New York for a few months in 2006 for access to "more clubs and opportunities," and he's going back there for good in May. Behind the mike, he usually has to tell a joke or two before he commands attention; he tends to dress plainly and takes the casual approach of someone who hasn't quite mastered transitions. But this is a carefully controlled persona that grounds his silliness and easy sarcasm. The "40-year-old white woman selling weed" on Showtime's Weeds, he says, "shoulda gotten robbed in the opening credits." And after mentioning he just got his new Web site up he adds matter-of-factly, "It's called www.yahoo.com." For this show, which he's producing and hosting, he's bringing along local comedians Damn Fool and Chon Aztek. a Fri 2/23, 8:30 PM, Tonic Room, 2447 N. Halsted, 773-248-8400, $5, 21+.
