The Internet may be good at turning lies into accepted fact, but it's got nothing on the gossip mill that comes near to grinding up poor Catherine Morland in this comedy based on an 1817 novel by Jane Austen. Perception starts shaping the naive Miss Morland's reality soon after she arrives in the English resort town of Bath, thanks to the generally venal calculations of those around her. Meanwhile, she forms a few delusions of her own under the influence of a gothic romance she's been reading. There's a genteel sort of hell to pay for all these fictions, and it's depicted charmingly, both in Tim Luscombe's 2004 script and in Joanie Schultz's imaginative and assured staging of it for Remy Bumppo Theatre. Sarah Price is a delightful grab bag of adolescent effusions as Catherine. —Tony Adler
