The social status of a high school girl may well depend on whether she wears glasses and what she does with her hair. So many filmmakers have exploited this notion merely to cast an ingenue in an “unattractive” role that it's encouraging to see someone in the industry finally noticing the absurdity. Set at a high school named for genre king John Hughes, this judicious mix of caricatures and hackneyed subplots—with a through line indebted to She's All That—treats Hughes's movies somewhat more gingerly than it does other teen movies released in their wake. Joel Gallen directed a screenplay by Michael Bender, Adam Jay Epstein, Andrew Jacobson, Phil Beauman, and Buddy Johnson; with Chyler Leigh and Chris Evans. 82 min.
