I'm writing in response to a letter from Ron Friedman of Deerfield in the July 18 issue.

Friedman writes, "Contrary to the now documented bad numbers that Kinsey originated, gays and lesbians comprise maybe 3 percent of the U.S. population."

He is, of course, making reference to the much-accepted idea that Kinsey established the 10 percent-of-the-population-is-gay notion.

To anyone who has actually read much of Kinsey's research, however, it is clear that this kind of labeling was exactly what he was against.

He wrote, "It is a fundamental of taxonomy that nature rarely deals with discrete categories. Only the human mind invents categories and tries to force facts into separated pigeonholes."

Like everything else in nature, he believed that human sexuality was about many shades of gray, and not black and white.

His studies, involving thousands of interviews with Americans from all walks of life, have been largely corroborated by subsequent research.

One of his findings was this: 37 percent of American men have a homosexual experience between adolescence and old age.
