Now and Forever Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks The Short List (Theater)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through March 24 2013

This musical revue reveals the strengths and weaknesses of England's premier living middlebrow tunesmith, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. Cherry-picked from such long, often fragmented and overproduced shows as Cats, Evita, and The Phantom of the Opera, Webber's songs are actually improved by being taken out of context. It helps, of course, that they're sung here by an ensemble of crack triple threats, who wring all the feeling they can out of the self-consciously arty selections. But laying the songs out end to end also reveals how often Webber's myriad lyricists have failed him, weakening his music with disappointing cliches and bad poetry. The best parts of the show are the instrumentals that accompany the dance numbers. Choreographed by Marc Robin and others, those numbers are performed with an infectious gusto by a cast that seem to be genuinely enjoying themselves. —Jack Helbig
