Number of People The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through April 18 2010

Toward the end of writer/director Emilie Beck's single-character play, elderly, fading Holocaust survivor Leo Gold recounts a time when he had to choose whether or not to take vengeance on a German boy. It's a chilling moment. But my attention had begun to wander long before we reached it--the result of too much narrative throat-clearing on the author's part. Honoring the memories of those who have survived genocide (Beck's script also works in references to Rwanda) is noble. But neither nobility nor an intelligent, vulnerable performance by Beck's father, Bernard Beck, is enough to imbue this show with the urgency and passion its subject requires. --Kerry Reid
