There's always a fine line between a plot point and a motive, but in tragedies—and adaptations—the distinction is often impossible to make. The only black student at a southern school where he's the star basketball player has sparked the interest of the white dean's daughter and the envy of the white coach's son. But there are really only two roles in this Othello-based drama—puppet and puppet master. The “show” is torturous and unenlightening, but I guess that's the point.
