Octavarius: So Nefarious The Short List (Theater) Recommended

When: Sundays. Continues through Dec. 12 2010

Runner-up for best sketch/improv troupe in the 2010 Reader reader's poll, Octavarius is dedicated to finding "fun everywhere its tentacles can reach," and it's hard not to be charmed by the creative play emerging from their improvisations. Each performance in this run has a different theme; the show I attended, "Hipster-prov," featured cast and audience members alike dressed as hipsters--though the audience members generally looked more like narcs in hipster disguise. At times I had to wonder how often the Octavarians actually leave their Lakeview sanctum sanctorum and venture into the Hipsterslovakian hinterlands west of Ashland and south of Diversey, but the theme was generally just a starting point. The show wasn't as much about hipsters as about the fearless, spirited, energetic interplay that has come to represent the very best of Chicago improv. --Brian Costello
