O'Horten

With movies like Kitchen Stories and Factotum, Norwegian writer-director Bent Hamer has proved himself an apt pupil of such deadpan comic filmmakers as Jim Jarmusch and Aki Kaurismaki. The title character and placid center of this quiet, unemphatic comedy (2007) is a solitary railroad engineer who draws great comfort from the timetables and regulations of his job; forced to retire on his 67th birthday, he leaves behind his regimented existence and steps into a world that's strange, unpredictable, and sometimes magical. PG, 90 min.
