Olivia Block & Dan Burke, Haptic, Jon Mueller Recommended Soundboard

When: Tue., March 10, 9:30 p.m. 2009

Though Olivia Block and Dan Burke are both sound artists, at first glance they might seem like unlikely collaborators. As Illusion of Safety, a name he’s been using for more than 25 years, Burke can come on strong, confronting you with fractured impressions of all the shit that’s wrong with postindustrial society; Block’s music is often oblique in method and content, but she prefers more organic sounds, generally steering clear of darkness and dystopianism. But both are skilled at blending performance, processing, and field recordings into detailed, emotionally complex sound fields. For their first show together, they plan to improvise responses to a graphic score using electronics, autoharp, guitar, found sound, and amplified handheld objects. Locals Haptic play second; Milwaukee’s Jon Mueller opens with a new percussion piece, Physical Changes, which he’ll perform with a trio. —Bill Meyer
